I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. I have many fond memories of him from my childhood and teenage years! I always enjoyed the trips to your house in Roanoke and Daleville! I know that he and my dad really enjoyed each other's company. I wish I could be there Saturday, but will be unable to. You all are in my thoughts and prayers! Love, Luanne

Dear Mike and David,
I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He and I bonded over history, of course, and our love of Jefferson. He has left such a wealth of information for those who follow him with regard to research on Botetourt, Lewis & Clark, UVa, and lots of other topics.

I interacted with Gene when I was the director of the UVA Jefferson Symposium for a number of years. I was impressed with his deep interest in Thomas Jefferson and the scholarship he brought to bear on areas of Jefferson's life that were important to him. For several years I handed out copies of Gene's book about Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia to participants in the Jefferson symposium. It was a very popular gift. I count myself as lucky to have known Gene and I know he will be missed by all his friends and family.
