GySgt Wayne Edward Powell Sr., USMC, Ret., 84 of Roanoke, passed away peacefully in his home Wednesday, July 25, 2018.
Wayne was born in Fincastle October 27, 1933 and was the son of the late William E. and Florence G. Hall Powell. He lived in Fincastle until his military career took him to the west coast.
Wayne retired as a Gunnery Sergeant with The United States Marine Corps and retired after 23 years of service. Subsequently, he served the Marine Corps as a Civil Servant for seven years. Wayne enjoyed singing in the choir of the various churches in which he was a member. He was an avid supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA; was a history buff of the Civil War, enjoyed country and gospel music, and was an equestrian trainer.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Vicky Grimm; sons Wayne Powell, Jr., William Powell, Gary Powell, and Curtis Powell all of Oceanside, California; step-children: Tony Grimm and Christie Grimm both of Vinton; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; former wife and mother of his children, Phyllis Powell of Oceanside, California.
A graveside service with full military honors provided by The United States Marine Corps will be 11:00 am, Friday August 3 at Wheatland Lutheran Cemetery, 1560 Wheatland Road, Buchanan. Wayne’s family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville Thursday, 6-8 pm.
