Steven Lee Blackwell

Steven Lee Blackwell, 61, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Steve was born July 27, 1956 in Hampton, Virginia and lived in Roanoke most of his life. He was the son of the late William F. Blackwell and Christine Ferguson Schaffer. Steve worked in residential construction and served in The United States Navy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents and a brother. Steve is survived by his children Steven “Scoot” Blackwell, Joshua Blackwell, and Adam Blackwell; grandchildren: Kenzie, Sabrina, and Jacob; sister, Uncle Al, best friend Billy Shanks; caretaker/former wife/mother of his children/best friend Linda Phillips; step-daughters Brenda Yopp and Barbara Turner; cousin Gary Craighead; and many other family friends.

Steve was very loved until the end and will be dearly missed.

We would also like to send a special thanks to the following people for all of the love, comfort, prayers, and the support they have given to our family during Steve’s long illness and passing: thanks to Lt. Col. Peter J. Unitt and Gerri, Arlene Elmore, Anissa Harlow, James and Melinda Stout, Kelly Holbrook, Lester Blackwell, the Oncology Staff at Salem VA Hospital, Dr. Inal, Lucy, Debbie, Meredith, Gail, and Cheryl, Dr. David Buck and staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Center, Jennifer Nelms (VA Dietician), American Cancer Society for rides for Linda transporting back and forth while Steve was in the hospital; Tanya Blackwell and Melissa Francisco for helping with Steve’s care at home, and Lewis and Carol Wertz.

Private graveside services with military honors will be conducted at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia. A celebration of Steve’s life will be 4:00pm, Friday, September 1 at the home of his son Steven “Scoot” Blackwell, 6949 Old Mill Road, Roanoke.
