Capt. Richard Lee Schroeder, USA Ret, age 83 of Blue Ridge passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial.
Richard was born in Bay City, Michigan March 22, 1935 and was the son of the late Lee Carl Bernard and Bertha Caroline Mehl Schroeder.
Richard was an executive sales director in contract food sales and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an Eagle Scout and was one of the most highly decorated Eagle Scouts in the state of Michigan. Richard enjoyed bird watching, was an outdoorsman, and enjoyed watching sports with his family, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jackson, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Mary Jo Hoenig Schroeder; sons: Stevenson (Candice) Schroeder of Bedford, Robert (Laura) Schroeder of Troutville, Richard L. Schroeder of Buchanan; daughter, Maryanne (Darren) Kirby of Fincastle; grandchildren: Anna Schroeder, Laken Schroeder, Allison Kirby, Josef Schroeder, and Paxton Kirby; and special neighbor, Marlys Swearengin.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 20 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road Daleville with Ben Peyton officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Godwin Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, 6-8pm.
