Mildred Montez “Millie” Anderson, age 88, formerly of Rockbridge County, passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Millie was born in Roanoke July 4, 1934 and lived in Rockbridge County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Walter Oscar and Fannie Belle Love Bonhotel.
Alongside her husband Walter, Millie worked on the family farm along the James River, Sydney Vale where they raised their four children. The farm was purchased by Walter’s family following their release from a World War II Japanese prisoner of war camp. She later managed a family grocery/convenience store near Cave Mountain Lake. Thereafter, the family moved to Windsor Hills Farm situated along the Maury River in Rockbridge County. Millie stayed active during her retirement volunteering at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington for more than forty years. Millie loved to travel, with trips to Vatican City, Europe, Hawaii, Cancun, Mexico, and evenings exploring Georgetown's restaurants and the Kennedy Center.
She was a long-standing member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lexington and spent her final years alternating between the family farm in Rockbridge and her house on Jefferson Street in Lexington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hiram Anderson; brothers: Albert Bonhotel and Malcolm Bonhotel; and sisters: Lois Bonhotel and Virginia Webb; and long-time dear friend, Francis Watts. Millie is survived by her son, Walter H. III (Renee) Anderson of Lynchburg; daughters: Lawanda Anderson Swope-Turanli (Dr. Solomon Turanli) of Great Falls, Virginia, and Linda Anderson (Kurt) Russ of Lexington, and Ladonna Anderson (Dr. William) Larsen of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandchildren: Eli (Chandler) Larsen, Abigail Anderson, Rachel Anderson, Anna Anderson, and Jaden Anderson; great-granddaughter, Ella Larsen; brother, Walter (Marcie) Bonhotel of Cleveland; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Millie’s life will be 2:00 pm Saturday, November 12 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road Daleville with Rev. Fr. Stephen McNally officiating. Burial will be at Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Eagle Rock. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8pm Friday, November 11.
