Marshall Steven Gates, 75 of Troutville, died Saturday, October 6, 2018.
Marshall was born in Reading, Pennsylvania May 22, 1943. He grew up and lived in the Roanoke Valley, and moved to Botetourt County in 1978. He was the son of the late Maurice D. and Reitta F. Erdman Gates.
Marshall was a graduate of Cave Spring High School and received his bachelor’s degree from William and Mary where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. Marshall received his master’s degree from the University of Maryland where he taught as a graduate assistant. Marshall worked as an insurance broker for more than 50 years. He was a member of Fincastle Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon. Marshall served as an active supporter of Botetourt County Recreation Department including many years as a youth coach, and supporter of local youth athletes.
Marshall is survived by his wife of more than 49 years, Sandra Elizabeth Maeder Gates; sons and daughters-in-law Brian and Wendy Gates of Blue Ridge, LTC Michael and Erin Gates of Ft. A.P. Hill, Virginia; daughter Jenny Griffin of Fincastle; grandchildren: Olivia Griffin, Meredith Griffin, Ethan Gates, Mason Gates, and Evan Gates; sister and brother-in-law Gail and Ben Womble of Williamsburg; son-in-law Michael Griffin; niece and nephews: Kelly Winn, Mark Womble, and Tim Womble.
A memorial service honoring Marshall’s life will be 5:00 pm Thursday, October 11 at Fincastle Presbyterian Church, 108 East Back Street, Fincastle with Reverend David Dickerson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall from 5:45 to 7:30 pm Thursday.
