Luther D. “L.D.” Orange, age 91 of Buchanan, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center.
L.D. was born in Montvale February 5, 1932 and lived in Buchanan most of his life. He was the son of the late Lewis B. and Edith Dunman Orange Shumaker.
L.D. served in The United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was pastor of Evening Light Tabernacle for several years. He retired as a crane operator from Roanoke Iron and Steel and was very proud that some of that steel went into the construction of the New River Gorge Bridge. L.D. enjoyed walking with his dog, Doodle in the mountains, but his real passion was sharing his faith, bringing people to his Lord, and making music celebrating his faith. L.D. played stringed instruments, making several gospel records and playing on WKBA 1550AM in Vinton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice E. Sloan Orange; brothers: Leo Orange, Gene Orange, and Norman Orange; and sister, Lorraine Painter. L.D. is survived by his son, Donald (Tana) Orange; daughters: Beverly (Mike) Harris and Sandra Pascual; grandchildren: Cory Orange, Josh Pascual, Hannah Pascual, Kenneth (KC) Gray, and Erika Gray.
The family will receive friends 2-5pm Sunday, June 4 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road Daleville. A private graveside service will be conducted at Fairview Cemetery in Buchanan with Pastor Tim Humes officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Dementia Research, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601; or to National Down Syndrome Society, National Down Syndrome Society, 1155 15th Street NW, Suite 540, Washington, DC 20005.
