John Idas Poynor

John Idas Poynor, age 80 of Fincastle, peacefully passed away at his home Saturday, May 1, 2021.

John was born December 21, 1940 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and lived in Fincastle for the past twenty years. He was the son of the late Idas C. and Vera V. Roberts Poynor.

John served as a pilot for The United States Navy and Navy Reserve. He retired as a pilot for TWA. In addition to flying, John enjoyed woodworking and woodcarving, carpentry, had a toy business, and bred Arabian Horses. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and Quiet Birdmen. From 2002-2008, John and his son Jimmy built an airplane, a Vans RV-8 as a father/son project.

John is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Dianne Conner Poynor; son, James Poynor of Fredericksburg, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Stephen Landau of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey; brothers and sisters-in-law: George and Patricia Poynor of Fort Worth, Texas, Robin and Donna Poynor of Gainesville, Florida, and Michael and Carol Poynor of Hammond, Louisiana.

The family will have a private service for family and friends at a later date.
