O.T. Byers, 78, of Roanoke, died Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Lewis Gale Medical Center following a long illness.
O.T. was born February 5, 1939 in Amsterdam in Botetourt County. He was raised in Botetourt and lived there before moving to the Roanoke following his service in the US Army. O.T. was the son of the late Randolph Dennis and Lucille Ella Hammonds Byers.
He was a truck driver for Russell Transfer and Houff Transfer, Inc. O.T. was a member of 17th Street Baptist Church and enjoyed NASCAR.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara A. Leech Byers; grandson Joshua M. Byers, brothers, and sisters. O.T. is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Vanessa Byers of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Dustin Walters of Thaxton; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother Carl Byers of Franklin County; sisters and brothers-in-law Esther and Richard Flowers of Stewartsville, and Margaret Ann and Dan Randolph of Arizona.
O.T. was a generous man who never met a stranger.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 5 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road with Reverend David Jones officiating. Burial will be at Daleville Cemetery. O.T.’s family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday beginning at 1:00 pm until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite #106, Roanoke, Virginia 24018.
