James E. Wilcher, 84, of Moneta, died Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Berkshire Health and Rehab following a long illness.
James was born November 23, 1932 in Botetourt County and lived in Buchanan until moving to Moneta a year ago. He was the son of the late James H. and Nannie Wilcher.
James was a diesel mechanic for James River Limestone, retiring in 1997 after 44 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing at the Moose Lodge, and the US and Confederate flags.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his grandson Alex Giulekas, and one brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gerlene L. Brogan Wilcher; son and daughter-in-law James “Punky” and Paula Wilcher of Glasgow; daughters and son-in-law Patricia and Kenneth Janney of Moneta, and Sandra Clapsadl (Jesse James Hall) of Vinton; five grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren; brothers Leo Wilcher of Fincastle and Dickie Wilcher of Montvale; sisters Sara Agnor of Roanoke County and Ruby Heck of Bedford.
A service honoring James’s life and memory will be 5:00 pm, Sunday, November 19 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville with Ben Peyton officiating. Burial will be Monday at 11:00 am at Godwin Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm until the time of the service.
