James Lee Red Spencer Sr.

James Lee “Red” Spencer, Sr., 85, of Troutville, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Lewis Gale Medical Center following a brief illness.

Red was born in Roanoke County October 19, 1932 and lived in Botetourt for more than 36 years. He was the son of the late Robert Howard and Rachael Smallwood Spencer.

Red was a member of Community Advent Christian Church and worked for Powers Fence Company and Friendship Manor. When he was younger, he was an avid skater both ice skates and roller skates.

In addition to his parents, Red was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years Kathryn Lind Spencer and his great-grandson Daniel Webb. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law James Lee Spencer, Jr. and Debbie, James and Janie Gibson all of Roanoke, Cecil and Lori Gibson of Hardy; daughters and sons-in-law Terresa and Sam Simpson of Roanoke, Betty and Jim Southers of Cloverdale, Kathy Gutierrez and Joey of Troutville; numerous loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially his caregiver: granddaughter Jennifer Webb; and a brother Bill Spencer of Salem.

A celebration of Red’s life will be 4:00 pm Sunday, January 28 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville with Reverend TG Ayers and Reverend Eric Gutierrez officiating. Burial at Sherwood Memorial Park will be at a later date. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service on Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm.
