In the presence of family, friends and an outpouring of love, Gary Vance (GV) Black passed on June 12, 2017.
Gary leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Grace Audrey Black; his sister Sue Black Venable of Matthews, NC; his son Michael and wife Sharon of Dallas, Texas; his son Mark and wife Patty; his daughter Dana (Musgrove) and husband Mark of Dallas, Texas; his son Darin and wife Denise; his daughter Terri (Sparks) and husband Patrick; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and many close friends.
Born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia on October 17, 1929, the son of Cecil and Lucy Black, Gary experienced life the way few others have. He devoted his life to country, community, and family.
After graduating from Jefferson High School, Gary enlisted in the United States Navy, where he retired after 22 years of distinguished service as a Chief Petty Officer (Air Traffic Controller). He then went on to serve and retired with the Roanoke City Police Department after 20 years.
He was proud of his military and police careers but Gary considered his family his crowning achievement.

A memorial service with full military honors will be 7:00 pm, Thursday, June 15 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville. A private inurnment will take place Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Gary’s family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service, beginning at 5:00 pm.
